Bruxism
Minimise Clenching + Grinding
Chronic grinding and clenching of teeth (Bruxism) can cause significant jaw discomfort, as well as headaches, neck pain, and damage to teeth. This treatment involves the injection of a muscle-relaxing agent directly into the muscles of mastication. By relaxing these muscles, this procedure alleviates symptoms and offers relief from pain and tension.

FAQs
What is bruxism?
Bruxism is a medical term for teeth grinding and clenching, which often occurs involuntarily during sleep or while awake. It can lead to various dental issues and is a common cause of jaw pain and headaches.
How is bruxism treated at Sculpt?
Bruxism is treated using targeted injections into the masseter muscle, in the jaw, with botulinum toxin (or “anti-wrinkle”). This relaxes the muscle and helps reduce the force of clenching or grinding.
Is botulinum toxin a safe treatment for bruxism?
Yes. Botulinum toxin has been approved by the TGA for decades and is used in a variety of medical and cosmetic treatments.
How long does the effect of botulinum toxin treatment for bruxism last?
The effects typically last for 4-6 months, after which you can repeat the treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
These injections are generally well-tolerated, and most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. Some patients even find relief during the procedure as the needling alone often release the muscle temporarily.
Are there any potential side effects of botulinum toxin treatment for bruxism?
Other than occasional mild bruising or tenderness at the injection site, side-effects from this procedure are uncommon. Rarely, there can be complications like difficulty chewing or an uneven smile, which are temporary.
Can bruxism treatment be covered by Medicare or private health insurance?
Unfortunately, in the cosmetic setting, these treatments aren’t covered by insurance or Medicare. There are certain medical conditions, when treated by specialists by botulinum toxin, may be eligible for cover (such as chronic migraines when treated by a neurologist). It is best to speak to your GP in regard to this.
